Discriminatory policies of Myanmar’s government since the late 1970s have compelled hundreds of thousands of Muslim Rohingya to flee their homes in the predominantly Buddhist country. Most have crossed by land into Bangladesh, while others have taken to the sea to reach Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand.
Renewed violence, including reported rape, murder, and arson in 2017, triggered a massive exodus of Rohingya amid charges of ethnic cleansing against Myanmar’s security forces. Those forces claim to be carrying out a campaign to reinstate stability in the western region of Myanmar.
Actor/Musician Riz Ahmed his been the most vocal influencer in Hollywood, partnering with DEC to help raise money for the people of Rohingya. Ahmed has brought together notable names in the industry to help bring further awareness to the cause including, Aziz Ansari, Minday Kaling, Mohsin Hamid, Freida Pinto, Neelam Gill and many more.
"The violence in Myanmar’s Rakhine state is creating suffering on a catastrophic scale. Since 25 August 2017, more than half a million people, mostly Rohingya women and children, have fled to Bangladesh and arrived in overflowing camps and settlements. They are exhausted and in urgent need of shelter, medical care, water and food. DEC member charities are there, supporting relief efforts and hoping to help fund humanitarian assistance in Myanmar’s Rakhine state, if access opens up. But more needs to be done. And you can take a step to help save lives."
